Work activities
Entry requirements
Entry requirements to become a marine engineer differ depending on whether you wish to work on:
- fishing vessels
- merchant navy ships, such as cargo boats, cruise liners and super yachts
- vessels that work in restricted waters, such as harbour tugs and ferries
- on shore – working on vessels when they are in dry dock.
To get a Marine Engineer (Class 6) certificate you must:
- be aged over 18 years
- prove you have worked at sea for at least the minimum time required, which varies depending on your previous training and qualifications
- hold a current first-aid certificate
- pass police and medical checks
- supply work and character references.
Career Prospects
After successful completion of BE/BTech in Marine Engineering/nautical science, one can join as fourth engineer or third assistant engineer. Since the job on the ship entails residing on ship for a major part of the year there are other exciting avenues as well. Marine engineers are also employed by engine production firms, ship building firms, research bodies, ship design firms and also in the Indian Navy.
The marine engineers can remain within the ambit of the shipping industry and join marine workshops at land i.e. at the ports. Alternatively, the marine engineers can join ship manufacturing companies, which are equally good paymasters.
These days the marine engineers are employed in the IT sector in a major way, apart from consultancy companies like Price Waterhouse Coopers and DCL, in construction companies, power sector, steel industry, and electronic industry.
Those who want to join Government Service can consider Directorate General Shipping of India. Those with entrepreneurial skills can also explre the entreprenuerial scope in the field.
Those marine engineers who have a passion for academics can pursue post graduation and enter the field of academics where the demand for qualified academicians in this field is growing very fast. Pay Package
Starting salary of a fresh marine engineering graduate are usually higher than other engineering branches. It can go even high if the candidate wishes to join an oil tanker. There are various levels from first engineer to fourth engineer culminating in Chief Engineer.
Marine jobs are highly paid and enjoyable. The marine engineers get NRI status, which is, tax-free income based on their service at sea, ex-India. They also get the opportunity to see the world through sailing as a profession without any extra expense. Luxurious life through lucrative salary comes as a big compensation being away from home.

A Day in the Life of a Marine Engineer
Based on the performance specifications of the vessel, marine engineers design the propulsion system to deliver the power required. They also design the steering system, heating, cooling and ventilation systems and hydraulics for the ship. If the job is a retrofit, the marine engineer studies the current plans before designing the new systems.
Once marine engineers know what equipment is to be installed and where each duct, machine and power source is to be located, they prepare detailed plans. They create layouts and schematics, determine the work schedule and prepare a cost estimate for approval by management.
As the work progresses, marine engineers may conduct periodic inspections or tests to catch any issues as soon as possible. They ensure that design specifications are being followed, monitor the project budget and prepare status reports for clients or managers.
Although most of a marine engineer's work can be performed in an office, there are times when sea trials are part of the job. Marine engineers may spend time aboard ship to test how the vessel performs or to gather information for maintenance or an upcoming retrofit. Engineers who specialize in offshore drilling may spend some time on the oil rig to supervise maintenance or repair efforts involving the rig's mechanical systems.
Career Advancement Opportunities
Marine engineers can advance into supervisory or management positions with experience. Typically, the USCG licenses can help marine engineers move up; as the level of license increases, responsibilities normally increase. Some marine engineers move into sales, using their technical knowledge to help clients plan and execute projects.

Marine Engineer
Marine Engineers are responsible for the design and construction of seagoing vessels and structures, focusing primarily on their internal systems. Simply put, they design the onboard electrical, environmental and propulsion systems aboard everything from oil platforms to cruise ships.
Marine Engineering is an exciting and challenging career which deals with manufacturing, designing and operation of ship machinery and engines. It is one of the disciplines of engineering which deals with science and nautical architecture. The marine engineers are engaged in supervising the engine crew involved in operating the machines. They also check for the smooth functioning of all electric motors, steam engines and propulsive engines etc. The marine engineers continuously take efforts to improve the efficiencies of gas turbine, existing shipboard conventional steam, nuclear propulsion plants and diesel. This is the best field for getting excellent government jobs.
Performance and growth of industry in India
Marine engineering has a great scope in India. Many of the students want to pursue this advance branch of engineering. Scope of marine engineering courses give plenty of opportunities on and off shores.
Options and Opportunities
Marine engineers has various job responsibilities in the industries like shipping, ship manufacturing, steel industry, power sector, manufacturing sector, consultancy firm. They design, construct and develop nautical equipments. After completing Marine Engineering courses candidates can option for lucrative career options in public and private shipping companies, engine production firms, ship building and designing firms, navy, research bodies.
